Ballon Rocket

Race a Balloon
Can you make a Balloon fly across string by just letting go of it.

Hypothesis
I think it will break because the wind is stronger than the tape.

Materials
String,balloon, tape,1 straw,2 chairs.

Method
1. Tie the string to a chair.
2. Slide the straw down the string and stick the other end of the string to the other chair.
3. Blow up the balloon and stick it to the straw then let go.
4. Watch it fly!

Observation
Hannah and I let go of the balloon and watched it fly fast.

Conclusion
I think it happened because one of the sides weren't taped so that side of the balloon was  free so the balloon went crazy.

Holiday Highlight

Holiday Highlight.

At Taupo/Kinloch

  • Fishing
  • Trout
  • Boat
  • Kinloch
  • Shopping
  • Lake

     Recount:

“Are we there yet”? I say.
“No not yet,” say’s Mum and Dad. It feels like we have been in the car for hours. How long have we got to go until we get to Taupo?. 1 hour later,
“OMG” I say. I grab my headphones and listen to some music for half an hour. Suddenly I fall asleep. I wake up.
“Are we there yet?”
“Yes” says Dom.
We get to our batch in Kinloch and unload our luggage.
“Hey Dad” ,I ask “can I help you and Dom get the boat ready for tomorrow”.
“Yes sure”, said Dad. I get my rod ready for tomorrow, I put my pink lightning bolt lower on. Mum calls us inside.
“Dinner Time”, she says.
Yum yum, thanks Mum. We eat our dinner and then sit down and watch some tv. After that I get ready for bed.

12 hours later.....The sun is beaming into our room, it’s blinding me. I get up and have breakfast. Then get changed. I grab the iPad and sit it on the boat, “
That’s all I need” I say to Mum. I jump into the car ready to go fishing. We get down to the marina and get the boat in the water. Dom and I hop on the boat and get our life jackets on. While Dad is parking the car, and Mum is holding the rope. Dom starts the motor then Dad arrives,we are off.

Dad take us to our direction where we want to fish. Dad slowly stops the boat, Dom and I get our rods out and ready to go. We wait till Dad tells us that we can let our lines out. Dom lets his line out first then me. We sit down and wait and wait. I grab the iPad while I wait suddenly, I hear the rod going zzzzzzzz. I jump up
“who’s rod is that?” I ask dad.
Yours, “yay” I say. I grab my rod and start winding in. I can feel my arm starting to get really sore. I really want the first fish so I give it my all. I see the trout swimming to the top of the lake. There it is Mum say’s. “Dom grab the net”, Dad says. Dom swoops the net into the water. “Whoooo I got it !” he yells.
I grab the measuring board and we measure the trout, it is way bigger enough. We kill the fish and sit it in a bin. Then we put our rods out again. We start over again. Dom wants to get a fish this time.

Here are some photos from when I was there.

Look at the beautiful blue flat lake!

Heaps of fish!

Boat or Submarine

 Boat or Submarine
Scientists:

Question/Goal/ problem
What shape of container will hold the most weight ?

Hypothesis (The shape I have chosen and why I think it is the best shape)
**Hannah and I have chosen a pan shape because we think it will float better.

Materials
Container filled with water, modelling clay, old coins

Method (What I did)
Create a boat out of modelling clay.
I Fill the container with water.
Place the boat carefully onto the water so it floats.
One at a time , put coins carefully into the boat . Count how many coins are in the boat before it sinks.
Observation/ Analyse (What happened and why I think it happened)
**Our creation floated the most coins it carried was seven, we kept making the sides taller so the water wouldn't get in. It was also big so it can carry more coins.

Conclusion  (What I discovered about floating/ sinking )

** I found out that a piece of paper can hold 4 coins at a time.
I worked out that if you make a shape that has a large bottom it will hold the most coins, because if you had a shape that has a small bottom it will place all the coins on one place causing it to fall down.

Here are some photos of room 16 doing the science experiment.

Wow I'm Rich!
I made a tea cup!

Mathletics 2013

Over the last week we have been doing Mathletics posters.
We had to choose a design from the book, and make our own poster.

This is my Reflection on Mathletics.

Reflection for Mathletics

Something I was pleased with was how my design turned out in the end, because I wasn't so sure it will look good.

I really enjoyed learning about the measurement of your square for your mathletics poster, because it is important you get the right sized square.

Something I found hard was making sure I wouldn't move when I am doing sharpie, because then it would not look great.
Something that made me think was to make a awesome design to go into the competition, because I will be proud of myself If I do good.
Something I want to get better at is doing harder designs.

(What can I do about it?) Try a harder one and give it a go, because it might look awesome.

This is my Mathletics Fotobabble.

I hope you liked my Mathletics post.

Race A Speedboat

Race a Speedboat
Can you make a paper boat race across the water just by gently touching the surface of the water with dishwashing liquid.
Hypothesis
I think that the washing liquid will make the speed boat go fast, because of the bubbles behind the boat pushing it along.

Materials
Coloured card, washing up liquid, pencil or sharpie, scissors, large container of water.

Method
First I cut out a boat out of colour paper, then I place the boat on top of the water, then I dropped a little blob of dishwashing liquid behind the boat, then the boat sailed away across the water.

Observation
When I placed the boat on the water and dropped a little bit of dishwashing liquid behind the boat sailed really fast.

Conclusion
I think that the dishwashing liquid and the paper do not go together so they push away from each other.

Short Experiment to Follow Up
Make Metal Float
Gently place a paperclip on the water’s surface.

Hypothesis
I think the paper clip will sink because it is metal so it will weigh it down a little bit causing it to fall, also because the paper clip has holes in it and the paper does not.

Observation
When Bree places the paper clip on top of the water it sunk straight away.

Conclusion (Why I think it happened)
I think it happened because Bree was holding the paper clip on the bottom, so it wouldn't drop down.
Wow look how fast they are going!
